RV Roof Cleaning: EPDM, TPO, Fibreglass and Aluminum

·Fresh N' Up Detailing

The roof is the part of an RV that gets the least attention and takes the most punishment. It also decides how clean the rest of the RV stays, because almost every black streak on the sidewalls starts with dirt washing off the roof.

What Kind of Roof Do You Have?

EPDM rubber: Usually white or grey, slightly rubbery to the touch, and often leaves a chalky white residue on your hand. Common on travel trailers and fifth wheels.

TPO: Also a membrane roof, but smoother and slightly shinier than EPDM, and it doesn't usually chalk the same way.

Fibreglass: A hard, smooth, gelcoated surface, common on many motorhomes and higher-end trailers.

Aluminum: Metal sheets with visible seams, found on some older RVs and certain models.

Your owner's manual or the manufacturer will confirm the type.

Cleaners to Avoid on Rubber Roofs

Petroleum solvents and citrus-based cleaners can soften and damage EPDM and TPO membranes, and abrasive cleaners wear them down. Use cleaners specifically labelled as safe for rubber roofs.

How Each Type Is Cleaned

Rubber (EPDM and TPO): A membrane-safe cleaner, a soft to medium brush and a thorough rinse, followed by a UV protectant made for rubber roofs.

Fibreglass: Cleaned like the rest of the RV's gelcoat, and it can be polished and sealed if it is oxidized.

Aluminum: A cleaner made for metal, with care around seams and fasteners.

Check the Sealant While You're Up There

Lap sealant around vents, skylights, air conditioners, antennas and roof edges dries out and cracks over time. Cleaning is a good time to spot cracks, gaps or lifting edges so they can be repaired before water gets in.

Safety

Not every RV roof is designed to be walked on. Check the manufacturer's guidance, use a sturdy ladder, and spread your weight with a board on softer roofs.

How Often?

At least once or twice a season, typically in spring and before winter storage, and more often if the RV is parked under trees.
