Marine Ceramic Coating for Gelcoat

A marine ceramic coating is a liquid that bonds to gelcoat and cures into a thin, hard, glossy layer. Compared with wax, it lasts much longer, resists UV and chemicals better, and makes the hull slick enough that waterline scum, bird droppings and dirt release with a normal wash instead of scrubbing.

The coating locks in whatever is underneath it, so preparation is most of the job. We wash and decontaminate the boat, correct the gelcoat with compounding and polishing to remove oxidation and swirls, wipe every panel down to remove polishing oils, and then apply the coating panel by panel and let it cure.

Ceramic coating can go on hull sides, topsides, the transom and smooth fibreglass on deck, and can also be applied to stainless and some clear surfaces. How long it lasts depends on the product, how the boat is stored and how it is washed, and we explain the maintenance when we quote.

We provide mobile boat ceramic coating across Toronto & the GTA, Halton, Hamilton & Niagara, Lake Simcoe, Georgian Bay, Muskoka, Kawarthas & Haliburton, North Bay & Sudbury, including Oakville, Toronto, Barrie, Collingwood, Gravenhurst and Peterborough. Call 416-729-7935 for a free quote.

Boat Ceramic Coating questions

Boat Ceramic Coating FAQs

Common questions about boat ceramic coating.

Is ceramic coating better than wax for a boat?+
For protection and ease of cleaning, yes. Wax sits on top of the gelcoat and wears off within weeks to months on the water. A ceramic coating bonds to the surface and lasts far longer, though it still needs regular washing with a suitable soap.
Does my boat need to be polished first?+
Almost always. A coating seals in whatever is underneath it, so oxidation and swirl marks have to be corrected first. The cost of that correction depends on the condition of the gelcoat and is part of your quote.
How long does the coating take to cure?+
Coatings need to stay dry for a period after application, and full cure takes longer. We plan the job so the boat is not launched or rained on before it is ready, which is why most coatings are done before launch or after haul-out.
Will a ceramic coating stop waterline stains?+
It won't stop lake water from leaving a scum line, but stains don't grip a coated hull the way they grip bare gelcoat, so they come off much more easily.
Can you coat a boat that is in the water?+
Topsides and deck surfaces can sometimes be coated in a slip, weather allowing, but the hull needs to be out of the water.
