Bring Faded Gelcoat Back to Colour

Gelcoat is the hard, coloured outer layer of a fibreglass boat, and it is porous. Years of sun break down its surface into a dull, chalky film; wipe a finger across an oxidized hull and it comes away white or tinted. Coloured gelcoats such as red, blue and black show it soonest, but white hulls yellow and dull too. Wax on its own will not fix it, because the damaged layer is still there underneath.

Oxidation removal is a cutting job. We machine-compound the hull with a rotary or dual-action polisher to remove the oxidized layer, step down to a finer polish to bring back clarity and depth, and finish with a sealant, wax or ceramic coating so the gloss is protected. Heavily oxidized gelcoat can need more than one compounding pass, and the quote says so.

Polishing is done with the boat out of the water, on a trailer or on stands, so we can reach the whole hull. Striping, graphics and logos are worked around carefully.

Boat Polishing & Oxidation Removal questions

Boat Polishing & Oxidation Removal FAQs

Common questions about boat polishing & oxidation removal.

How do I know if my boat is oxidized?+
Rub a clean finger or a dark cloth on the hull. If it comes away chalky, or the colour looks faded and flat even when wet, the gelcoat is oxidized and needs compounding, not just wax.
Can every oxidized hull be restored?+
Most can be brought back to good colour and gloss. Very old gelcoat that has been compounded many times can be thin in places, and severe crazing or cracking cannot be polished out. We do a test section and tell you what to expect before starting.
How long does a boat polish last?+
That depends on sun exposure, storage and what goes on top. A polished hull left unprotected will start to dull within a season; sealing it with a wax, sealant or ceramic coating and washing it regularly keeps the finish much longer.
Does the boat need to be out of the water?+
Yes. To polish the hull properly we need to reach every part of it, so the boat should be on a trailer, cradle or stands.
Do you polish pontoons and aluminum?+
Our polishing service is for fibreglass gelcoat. Tell us about aluminum pontoons or metal hulls when you ask for a quote and we will let you know what we can do.
