Hull Cleaning and Waterline Stain Removal
Lake water leaves its mark. A brown or yellow line forms along the waterline from tannins and minerals in the water, scum and algae build up below it, and boats left in the water all season can come out with a film and scale over the bottom of the hull. Scrubbing harder does not help much and scratches the gelcoat.
We use marine hull cleaners made for gelcoat, which dissolve stains and scale rather than grinding them off. They are applied, allowed to work and thoroughly rinsed, and the area around the boat is protected. After cleaning, the hull is washed and can be polished or sealed so stains have less to cling to next season.
Hull cleaning is done with the boat out of the water. On boats with antifouling bottom paint, we clean the topsides and boot stripe and leave the bottom paint alone.
